US Soccer Federation says Weah, other players targets of racist abuse after Copa America loss
- By PAUL NEWBERRY - AP Sports Writer
Tim Weah and other members of the U.S. national team were targeted with racist abuse on social media after the Americans were beaten 2-1 by Panama in the Copa America. The U.S. Soccer Federation issued a statement saying it was “deeply disturbed with the racist comments made online.” Weah, who is Black, was sent off with a red card in the 18th minute after punching a Panama player. It was earliest red card for a U.S. player since Jimmy Conrad was tossed from a 2010 friendly against Honduras. The short-handed Americans nearly held on for a tie, but Panama scored a late goal that put the U.S. hopes of advancing past the first round in serious jeopardy. Bryce Harper hurts hamstring on final play of Phillies' 7-4 loss to Marlins
- By ANTHONY SANFILIPPO - Associated Press
Bryce Harper limped off the field with an apparent hamstring injury after making the final out for the Philadelphia Phillies in their 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins. Hustling down the line as he tried to beat out a grounder to the right side, Harper reached for his left hamstring after crossing first base and hobbled toward the dugout. He will undergo imaging Friday. Earlier in the day, the slugger was elected by fans to start at first base for the National League in the July 16 All-Star Game at Texas. Philadelphia teammate Kyle Schwarber also got hurt, exiting in the ninth inning after experiencing left groin tightness. Sha'Carri, Lyles, McLaughlin-Levrone cruise through early rounds at US Olympic track trials
- By EDDIE PELLS - AP National Writer
Sha’Carri Richardson never made it to the start, let alone the finish, of the 200 meters at the last Olympic trials. At these trials, even in the opening round of what’s really her second-best race, she flashed another glimpse of the kind of sprinter who has emerged from all that trouble three years ago. Bursting from the starting block and turning the curve into her own, personal glidepath, Richardson was able to slow down over the final 20 meters and still won her opening round in 21.99 seconds. Noah Lyles and Gabby Thomas also cruised through their opening rounds of the 200, while Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran 53.07 seconds to win her first round of the 400-meter hurdles. Panama scores late goal, beats shorthanded U.S. 2-1 at Copa America after Weah red card
- By PAUL NEWBERRY - AP Sports Writer
José Fajardo beat backup goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the 83rd minute to give Panama a 2-1 victory over the United States at the Copa America and put the Americans in danger of elimination if they don’t beat Uruguay in their first-round finale. The U.S. played nearly the entire game a man down after a silly foul by Tim Weah in the 18th minute. Folarin Balogun put the short-handed U.S. ahead in the 22nd minute but César Blackman tied the score in the 26th. Horvath, who replaced injured Matt Turner at halftime, couldn’t prevent Fajardo’s close-range shot and Panama beat the U.S. for just the third time in 27 meetings. Bolivia's president denies being behind attempted coup and says the general acted 'on his own'
- By PAOLA FLORES and ISABEL DEBRE - Associated Press
Bolivian President Luis Arce has denied being behind an attempted coup against him and said the general who apparently led it “acted on his own,” lashing out at accusations that he had asked for the mutiny in a plan to boost his popularity. In his first appearance before the press since the failed apparent coup, Arce called suggestions of a self-coup “lies,” and he added: “I am not a politician that is going to win popularity through the blood of the people.” Arce earlier said his government announced that a total of 17 people had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the attempted coup, including Gen. Juan José Zúñiga. Read moreBolivia's president denies being behind attempted coup and says the general acted 'on his own'

The young democracy of Mongolia begins voting for an expanded 126-seat parliament
- By KEN MORITSUGU - Associated Press
Voters are electing a new parliament in Mongolia, a landlocked democracy that is squeezed between China and Russia, two much larger authoritarian states. At stake in Friday's vote are 126 seats in an expanded parliament, 50 more than in the previous election in 2020. The Mongolian People’s Party won that year in a landslide. It still appears to hold the upper hand, but other parties may be able to capitalize on voter discontent to eat into its majority. At one polling station, some voters dressed in formal silk robes for the occasion. Many in the district support the ruling party, but some younger voters said they chose candidates they hoped would bring change. Who is General Zúñiga, the shadowy officer behind the thwarted coup in Bolivia?
- By PAOLA FLORES and ISABEL DEBRE - Associated Press
The man behind the attempted coup that has rocked Bolivia remains a mystery to much of the country. Little known before bursting into Bolivia’s presidential palace tailed by tanks and armored vehicles, General Juan Jose Zúñiga served as commander of the country’s armed forces from 2022 until his public sacking and arrest on Wednesday. A career military man, Zúñiga owes his post to the very president whom he sought to oust in his attempted coup. President Luis Arce handpicked Zúñiga over two years ago, vaulting the intelligence official to the army’s highest ranks. Wednesday was not the first time that Zúñiga has found himself at the center of controversy. Read moreWho is General Zúñiga, the shadowy officer behind the thwarted coup in Bolivia?

NBA draft finally worth the longer wait for some players after moving to a two-day format
- By BRIAN MAHONEY - AP Basketball Writer
The NBA draft was completed on a second day in a second borough of New York, with the Toronto Raptors taking Jonathan Mogbo of San Francisco with the No. 31 pick. The league went to a two-day format this year instead of having its draft drag too late into the night. The second round was held Thursday at ESPN’s Seaport District studios in Manhattan after the first round took place as usual at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Ten players and their families attended, sitting in a room off the studio set, though the two players who were left in the green room at the end of the first round, Duke’s Kyle Filipowski and Johnny Furphy of Kansas, didn’t return. Two candidates drop out of Iran presidential election, due to take place Friday amid voter apathy
- By JON GAMBRELL and NASSER KARIMI - Associated Press
Two candidates in Iran’s presidential election have withdrawn from the race. It's an effort by hard-liners to coalesce around a unity candidate in the vote to replace the late President Ebrahim Raisi. Amirhossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi dropped his candidacy and urged other candidates to do the same “so that the front of the revolution will be strengthened." Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani also withdrew. Such withdrawals are common in the final hours of an Iranian presidential election, particularly in the last 24 hours before the vote is held when campaigns enter a mandatory quiet period without rallies. There are four other candidates still in the race. Analysts and experts broadly see the race at the moment as a three-way contest between two hard-liners and a reformist candidate.
