Zoo

Zoos & Aquariums

The Roger Williams Park Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the country, and it has a number of modern design features that make it a great option for kids. You can meet a variety of animals here, including snow leopards, giraffes, elephants, and zebras.

I like this zoo so much. They have so many animals. The size is good for a family. The Roger Williams Park also huge, includes museum and a lake that you can play swan boat. Will definitely go back when weather is better. Highly recommend to go early like 9am then you can easy to find a parking spot.

A very fun, clean. and welcoming zoo all around. I have come here a few times and experienced a normal zoo day, as well as the October pumpkin carved event, and the Asian Lantern Spectacular. The lantern event was stunning. It’s fun being in the park at night, but the light displays were incredible to see. The size and scale of them all - and a few even moved! If you get the chance, highly recommend.

We have a membership because my son is obsessed with this zoo! It’s always very clean, and the staff are always super nice. My son is autistic, and if you have a person in your life on the spectrum, I highly recommend. My tip would be to go during the week, and get there right as they open. The park can get really busy with lots of families, so it can be very overwhelming to those who have sensitivities and sensory problems. My son adores the zebras, the elephants, and the giraffes! All the animals are very well taken care of, and have roomy enclosures. The staff do a lot of work in conservation, and ensuring that endangered species are protected well.

One of the best zoos I have visited. I've never been able to see or be near a cheetah! I must have been lucky to see that all the animals were out today. There was a fun dinosaur exhibit for the kiddos the week I went. I didn't expect the zoo to be so big! I ended up staying for 2-3 hours and enjoyed every minute! You can tell the animals were very well taken care of ❤️ There is also a cute little petting farm here.

Robin F — Google review

Our recent visit to the zoo was nothing short of magical. All thanks to DJ Hill, our incredibly knowledgeable and engaging tour guide, who made the experience truly unforgettable.DJ Hill's passion for the animals was evident, as he told us about special and personal connections he had to some animals in the park. The highlight of our day was an unexpected surprise - the sloths! We were thrilled to see these amazing creatures up close. This was an added bonus we didn't expect, but it made our tour even more memorable! But the most magical moment of the day was undoubtedly the engagement proposal. DJ did an incredible job at incorporated the proposal into our animal encounter. My girlfriend was surprised and overjoyed! The zoo, the Zuuber tour, and DJ Hill played an integral part in making this day one of the happiest days of our lives. We can't recommend this experience enough!

Sean L — Google review

It's been a while since I've been back home, and they've done a great job enhancing the zoo. I wish I had the time on this trip to visit the lanterns at night. I love the new rainforest exhibit they added with the sloth!

John A — Google review

What a fantastic zoo. We were very happy to see the large enclosures the animals had. The zoo is very large and very easy to make your way through the entire zoo. There are many benches along the way if you get tired to take a rest. They time event the tickets so the crowds were not overwhelming. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. There is a good variety of animals. This was the nicest zoo I have ever visited. If you get tired of looking at animals they have a very fun zipline you can do for an added cost inside the zoo. There are carriages to rent for children and wheelchairs for those who need one. Parking was easy and ample. Very affordable prices would definitely recommend this for children and adults.

Debra C — Google review

This is a good zoo but not many animals can be found. You can cover entire zoo in maybe 2-3 hours. What i like about this place is how well it is maintained. Parking might be a struggle if you chose to come mid afternoon. Plan coming before 10 am and you might get a spot closest to the zoo. Overall a good experience for my toddler

Suraksha H — Google review

I visited for the first time for the jack-o-lantern spectacular and WOW that was amazing! So many, literally thousands, of carved pumpkins and so many neat and interesting designs to be seen. I didn't find parking to to be much of an issue, even on a busy Sunday night. We bought tickets in advance and showed the barcode on our phone for entry with no line. I highly recommend this!

Alex B — Google review

I haven't been to the zoo in a while and the experience on Monday was wonderful. It had a lot of updates made including my favorite, the rain forest building. It was great even though I couldn't find the sloth, lol. The mythical creature area was well worth the extra cost as well. 😍

Amy Q — Google review

Easy to get to.Very walkable.Plenty of rest stops and photo ops.Gluten free food options 👍👍Bring a mask to go into the rainforest exhibitEveryone seemed super friendly.Plan at least a 3 hour trip

William B — Google review

Get the membership! It pays for itself after 2 times and allows for discounts for special events. My son and I can casually walk around for a couple hours and just take it all in. The exhibits are well kept and the animals are very clearly taken care of. Each time we go we try and spend a little time learning a little something extra about one of the animals by utilizing the qr codes posted around the exhibits. Restrooms are all over the zoo so you aren't searching for one when you need one. My only big complaint is about the food which leaves something to be desired, but knowing that I just pack a lunch.

Lisa P — Google review

An incredible zoo and a fun time for the whole family. Vending machines are way over priced, though so bring a water and save your extra money for the gift shop or a quick lunch. On the positive, it is absolutely one of the best zoos I've been to and I very much recommend it for everyone.

Coffee S — Google review

This zoo was equally wonderful and disappointing depending on the exhibit. Some of the animal had great enclosures while others seemed to be in too small a space with very little greenery. The donkey, the zebras, watusi and the wildebeasts are sad. It was nice to see some animals I haven’t seen before. This was not the best zoo but for sure pretty decent. It was clean and the employees were very pleasant.

Yvette L — Google review

My self, my daughter, and five of my grandchildren attended the Christmas light spectacular and it did not disappoint. So many beautiful light displays to take on, Christmas carolers and hot coco made for a wonderful evening. This zoo does such an amazing job on this event every year and I would recommend to anybody from anywhere to visit.

Tracy Z — Google review

A Lil Providence Treasure!Located in one of my favorite parks on the East Coast, RWPZ is a family-friendly experience for all ages - both a zoo and nice walk around the wetlands. Our favorite part was the Faces of the Rainforest building, where some animals have an open enclosure and are allowed to roam the building! It was surreal to explore the rainforest (and yes, it's very humid conditions) with sloths, birds and golden tamarins moving about. Watch out for the bird poop though! You could get pretty close to some of the animals, especially those in their indoor enclosures. It allows you to view animal adaptations and behaviors more vividly (especially in the Rainforest)! The animals were fairly active earlier in the day (and probably would be again at the end of the day)- as typical with most zoos. The zoo was easy to navigate, had food and restroom facilities open even during reduced winter capacity, and most animals were viewable to the public (some moved to indoor enclosures instead of their typical outdoor ones). There's some construction to build new buildings, renovate exhibits or move new animals into exhibitions (like the serval, penguins, and red pandas), so that's something to keep in mind.Education: since there is no public educational programming in the winter, I don't feel like the zoo taught me much. There was some information about each animal (what you normally see displayed in zoos but I will say the fun facts and sometimes mentioned conservation efforts) but little to no information about their natural habitats or conservation efforts themselves. The Rainforest exhibit is on the newer end and is educational, so I'm hoping it's just a matter of upgrades.Cost: $10.50 (admission was discounted 50% in the winter; admission is typically $21 for adults)AZA Reciprocity: typically honored with a 50% discount; was not in effect during our visit because of the winter discountAccessibility: while the walking paths were clear from the snow and clearly marked, most exhibits didn't have automatic doorsWait Times: only ticket booth was open so there was a short wait (less than ten minutes) to purchase tickets or show them an online ticket for entry; there is a pretty $5 processing fee for online tickets so we decided to purchase tickets onlineTravel: about a 1.5hr drive from Boston or accessible by bus (arrives directly to the front gates)Parking: free parking is available on-site and pretty plentiful; overflow lots are located nearby in the parkRestrooms: the best thing was the plentiful restrooms at every corner! the hasbro background area for families with children even had a changing area, separate from the neighboring restroomCollectibles: collectible penny machines are $1 and presently didn't have RWPZ enamel pinsRecycling Program: recycle your e-waste by the ticket/entrance booths for freeFood Pantry: open to those who need it. that's a grab and go style food pantry by the entrance for visitors to leave non perishable items in or take items they needOther Notes: minimal reptiles at this zoo

Jenny L — Google review

I visited the Roger Williams Park Zoo, taking advantage of the first beautiful day of the year. Despite it being a busy day, the zoo never felt overcrowded, allowing us to enjoy our visit at a relaxed pace. It had been several years since my last visit, and I was impressed to see clean grounds and has a thoughtful layout. The selection of wildlife was diverse and engaging, making our trip truly memorable. Highly recommend for a pleasant day out!

John J — Google review

Went for the Jack O Lantern Spectacular, bought tickets ahead of time so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle getting in.Well, I can tell you going through the ticket booth is the least of your worries - finding parking was the most draining part about the visit. There were no signs pointing where to go specifically for the event. The roads and the signs within the zoo weren't lit either so it felt like every man for himself trying to find parking.Once you do find parking, you're hoping you can come across other people so you get an idea of where to go.Also if you go too late, a lot of concession stands are closed so if you get there past 7, make sure you're dressed warmly and have eaten something already because the lines at the places still open will take forever. The actual tour was nice, they definitely go a long way to set the atmosphere. The Lanterns were so cool but everyone also wants a picture so expect to inevitably bump into people. They had different themes throughout the tour and it was amazing seeing how intricate they could get.Sensory warning -*If you get overstimulated by a lot of sound, I highly recommend sound reducing headphones* and expect to encounter kids with flashing light toys of some sort.Overall it wasn't bad but there's a lot that could be improved in terms of organization and making it easier to plan for the throngs of people, especially on the weekend.Get there at least half an hour before your scheduled time slot so you have a chance to find parking closer to the event entrance.

Alex S — Google review

Great walkable zoo with nice exhibits. Cheetahs were most active late in the day at closing (feeding?) time. The walk-in building with the tropical birds and monkeys was very cool as the monkeys, birds, and sloths were all free within the building and 'jungle' as you walked through it.

Jon W — Google review

Love visiting for the Jack-o-lantern spectacular for the past few years. Plenty of incredible works of art to admire. Go on a weekday so it's not too crowded. Parking is free and decent if the crowd is light. Stroll at your own pace and take in all the sights. Definitely fun for all.

The neoclassical marble Rhode Island State House is a beautiful backdrop for portraits and perfect location for engagement photos. The tall buildings in the back with their different colors and heights make this place a colorful spot to shoot.

This state house is a huge architectural marvel right in the heart of Providence downtown. Frankly I didn't expect it to be this huge. The place was spotless and very well maintained. It's very close to the downtown and is spotted from various places in downtown. Do visit!

Pratik G — Google review

Fascinating state capitol built out of marble. Building was well maintained and the free tour they offer twice a day was very informative and interesting. Neat place to visit if you're into the history of the state or the country.

Jozef W — Google review

They can’t offer guided tours due to COVID-19, but after you pass thru security they will give you a map in the library & you’re welcome to do a self guided tour. Plus they have an interactive tour on their website if you don’t want to drive there! They have one of 3 original portraits in existence of George Washington. The library is public if you’re a research kind of person! We were in Awe!

Katherine S — Google review

Many thanks to Jack for a great guided tour of the State Capitol. We are a couple from California. We were the only tourists at ten o'clock in the morning. Jack gave us a one-hour tour guide. His professionalism and enthusiasm made us fall in love with Rhode Island. Thank you Jack, we are delighted to have such an outstanding staff at the state government! We hope to come back again!

The State Capital hosts a free, hour long, daily tour at 10am and 1pm with a very knowledgeable docent. The tour highlights how the capital building was built, the senate and house functions and lots of details about Rhode Island statehood. Highly recommend visiting if in Providence.

Claire A — Google review

What a beautiful, historical and captivating place to be. We had a wonderful time exploring the capital building.

Donnalese D — Google review

The building is an architectural beauty and positively brimming with history. Guided tours are available on the hour upstairs in the State Library. They have self-guided options as well but obviously you'll get a lot more info out of the knowledgeable guides. Tour lasts about an hour. Enter through the north entrance, pass security, and proceed upstairs to the second level. The State Library is located directly above where you entered.

Chris C — Google review

Impressive building. Inside and outside. Full of marbles, impressive dome, detailed artworks. The library are made with wood and the ceiling details are impressive. Free to go inside and self guided / wonder around. There is tourist center that also sell “Made in Rhode Island”. Parking are free on the parking lot - as long as the parking gate are up. Save some money than parking in the street

Alex C — Google review

Did a guided tour at 10 am (starts in the library on 2nd floor). Wonderful info and good pace. I learned a lot and enjoyed.

Christa D — Google review

Awesome one hour tour of the state house lead by Ann. Very informative and a great speaker. Was able to answer all the questions that the guests asked her. Awesome.

Mike M — Google review

The Rhode Island State house is one of the most majestic in the entire country. There is obviously a lot of history here, as well as the activity when the legislature is in session. Take the self-guided tour, or sign up for a tour. Be sure to check out the RI Colonial Charter museum (on the first floor) where you can see the ACTUAL CHARTER from 1663 !

Mike L — Google review

A beautiful statehouse with a lot of helpful employees. I’ve been here on a lot of field trips and have learned something new every time. Tours are very interesting and informative and are open to the public. The amount of marble is almost overwhelming but definitely beautiful. One of my classes was able to take part in a mock debate in the House chambers, an unforgettable experience to say the least. For the smallest state, Rhode Island’s statehouse sure is spectacular. The Independent Man is currently on display for the public before it is sent out to be repaired in early January 2024. Very cool to see, and also saw an informative display on slavery and civil rights in Rhode Island while there to see him. Check it out while you can!

Ben R — Google review

Very friendly people in the visitor center. It's worth a short stop, very beautiful marble construction. If you have time for a guided tour, that would be ideal.I did a self guided tour, which was less than 20 minutes. But I think that works as well.

Lam J — Google review

It's a beautiful building in neoclassical architectural design built in 1901. Located below the crest of Smith Hill in Providence, it houses RI Parliament House, Senate's, and Government offices, including of Governor. Daily 2 guided tours are conducted, which are very informative .May be it's a coincidence that interior resembles the Parliament House of Saschatchewan province of Canada. Strongly recommend visiting it , whenever in Providence.

Khalid O — Google review

This building is very appealing to look at. I'm sure there are some important things going on inside, but exterior makes a grand first impression.

Beautiful building. We arrived to late to tour the inside. We visited back in April and I noticed that at night/dusk there are lights making for beautiful photos.

The Providence Athenaeum is a historic lending library with rare books and local artwork. It encourages an appreciation for books and has programs that engage the public in conversation.

Providence Athenaeum sinks me into my curiosity. Helpful librarians and fascinating, unique collections, especially travel-history!

Ceridwen M — Google review

Small historical library with members-only privileges. Similar to historical mercantile libraries. Feels a bit crammed and the collection could be more actively managed. Fine for a 10-15 mins tour, but not a necessary attraction. Other historical libraries I've been to didn't ask for money to walk around the public areas.

Philippe G — Google review

The most beautiful library I have seen! A huge selection of books on all three levels. Exploring around is very fun!

Hannah S — Google review

I was invited here to the Athenaeum four or five years to hear about a book author and get a book signing. It was very calming, interesting, warm, the staff was very friendly, and the smell of books filled me up with old memories from back when I stood in my grandpa's old studio/library (he had a vast collection of old, preserved books, magazines, postcards, and more), in other words I felt like I was back at home. I look forward to visiting again and reading though their collection.

Chrystal R — Google review

This is a pretty cool historical library. I came for the self guided tour but several rooms are for members only, even sitting down at a desk is reserved for members. And the rare book room was for staff only, the lights weren't even on to look inside. It's very stuffy inside when it's hot out.I was surprised that you have to pay to be a member when almost every other library around is completely free. If you are under 35 you get a lower rate ($65) - I'm not sure why older people have to pay more. The membership "benefits" are what you get for free at any other library. The tour information even said that there are very few membership libraries left since they were turned into public libraries and made totally free for the community. I wish this place would do the same and make it more accessible.

Erika G — Google review

As a college student, I’m always looking for cute places to study. This is the perfect place! Feels very homey and I’m always productive when I find a good table here. Not to mention, it is absolutely gorgeous inside.I also went to their holiday party which was super cute! They had snacks and poetry reading in their beautiful space. I highly recommend checking it out if you are visiting or becoming a member of you live nearby!

Vivian M — Google review

Beautiful little library! For a suggested fee of $5, you can explore this gem. It's very quiet and calm inside, so we took our time slowly walking around, as to not disturb the students who were there. Really enjoyed our visit!

Natali S — Google review

One of the most magical feeling small libraries I have ever visited! This was the highlight of my day in Providence touring around the city. The top level has book nook areas with single style desk seating facing the windows that overlook the outside views. These areas are dreamy but reserved only for members which was a little disappointing seeing how beautiful the spaces were, but unoccupied and not being utilized by anyone at the time of my visit. Downstairs, I spent a couple hours reading on the lower ground level floor that felt cozy amongst other visitors that were studying or reading books in a public area that anyone could access and enjoy with comfortable seating options available. On street parking was available. I’d definitely come back again.

PMC L — Google review

Beautiful library with self-guided tours. There’s a suggested donation of $5 per person and they take credit card and cash. You have to check in by going to the office on the left hand side to get a sticker before you can walk around the library. There were plenty of members also studying/reading while we walked around and since it’s so quiet, be mindful of your squeaky shoes. There’s a mezzanine area as well as a downstairs part which houses the old artwork and some very comfy chairs. If you’re just doing the self-guided tour, you could spend half an hour to an hour, depending on how in-depth you’d like to go.

Shanelle S — Google review

Beautiful Library, quiet, peaceful, historic & cozy.

My husband and I held our wedding at The Athenaeum. It was absolutely spectacular. Jenny and Robin and the rest of the staff were so helpful and kind during the planning process. Robin was amazing during the rehearsal and day of the wedding. All of the guests were in awe with the beauty of the building, and the collection of books and art that were displayed. Truly a wonderful place, with wonderful people

Zoe P — Google review

It's an old historical library, worth a visit if you like old and quiet places shelved with books. There are three floors, a small bathroom in the basem*nt, main floor and 2nd floor where you'd find a semi enclosed place for writing and studying stepping over the crackling wood floor. They used to be free to visit. Now they really suggested a $5 donation. Technically people are still welcome to visit without a fee.

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, Brown University is a prestigious Ivy League university that is home to renowned programs in liberal arts and sciences. The university features a number of prestigious museums, including the RISD Museum, which houses over 86,000 pieces of art. Brown also has an active campus life with plenty of opportunities for students to get involved.

This review is strictly focused on the Brown University campus, and not the actual curriculum, because we have no shot of getting into the University. This campus is so historically gorgeous in architecture, location and layout, it really surrounds you. The capitol city of Providence is the background for the entire experience. I fell in love with Brown, and I've lived close by for 35 years. ❤️

Brown university- An amazing Ivy League school historical to the city of Providence. They have one the best architectures. Campus is super clean. Make a trip on the weekend when parking is easily available and if not then you should be able to find nearby the campus for $3-$15. They have around 7 public lots available for parking. They have tonne of restaurants in the vicinity.

If you want to visit Brown University, go on a Sunday morning. You'll be able to park easily nearby and you'll be able to enjoy a fairly empty quad. Want to see students out and about, wait until the afternoon. Beautiful buildings and grassy areas to enjoy. As for academics well, need I say anything? It's Brown.

Can only comment on the campus which is really intriguing. The weather was great. Grass is greener than in Harvard. Literally. And it rained there yesterday. 🙃

Waterplace Park is a riverside locale adjacent to downtown walking paths that hosts art installations and concerts. The view from the park during Waterfire provides a nice way to finish off a night out in Providence.

Cute area to walk around and chill. Great views! Awesome place to grab some photos.

Christine L — Google review

Nice place. Needs some life and activities. Very dismal. I was visiting from NYC. Couldn’t find one thing to do here. Unfortunately. There was an ice rink few blocks away we went by look around and left.

Ashley L — Google review

A lovely place in providence, for strolling, running biking. Some people only know it at night, when water fire is here. Which I will hopefully attend and add pictures. But it really is just as beautiful during a sunny day. It is located near the mall, and many great restaurants are around it. Get takeout and enjoy the view.

Anita M — Google review

Nice area to walk around in downtown Providence. Best known for WaterFire, which is a really cool experience, I actually prefer being here at other times without the huge crowd. However, this is the best spot to sit and enjoy WaterFire in my opinion. No matter where you’re standing, the backdrop of your photos will be impressive. My biggest complaint is that the current pushes all of the trash in the river into the southwest corner of the basin and it doesn’t seem like they remove it very often, but they are on top of it before WaterFire and other big events downtown.

Ben R — Google review

Waterplace park during waterfire event is worth visiting

Preety A — Google review

Love going to the water place park. Then go over to the pedestrian Bridge. Over see the city and canal have a coffee ☕ sandwich, ice cream, whatever. Love people watching. At night you can see the water fires...

Magnum P — Google review

Very calming atmosphere. Went one night with the family and there was nobody else there so it was nice to just look over the water and do some relaxation. Admittedly, there's nothing really interesting there to look at besides the distant buildings and slow-moving water, but that's good enough for someone who is just looking to relax for a bit. There are a few trash cans around and a good amount of benches for people to sit and relax. Also, I saw a bunny hopping around the park which was kind of cool because I didn't know there were bunnies in this area. I saw some more the next day as well outside of the park. Also, if you're here during the warmer months and are hanging around dusk or dawn, I recommend using mosquito repellant on your body because I did get a couple of bites because I was wearing shorts and short sleeve, but it was nothing serious and not the fault of the park. Wildlife is wildlife. And just something else to note, I heard an owl making its hoot noises, but didn't get a glimpse of it!

Jonathan S — Google review

Waterplace Park is located in downtown Providence with views of the Woonasquatucket River (try saying that three times fast). There is a 3/4 mile paved walkway with bridges. Across the street is the huge Providence Place Mall. Every year, the popular Waterfire event occurs there; they light a bonfires that are strategically placed on the river. This is an urban park with a city view. I used to hang out there as a teenager; prowl the mall then a walk to the park, typical teenager stuff. It's a great place to go for a walk and sightseeing. There are tons of restaurants and bars nearby. There is on street parking and you can pay to park at the mall. If you're in the area, definitely check out this popular landmark in Providence!

Kim V — Google review

We were in this area for dinner and we were an hour earlier than expected. So we decided to check out this place for passing time. We were on a January Night and there was not much activity going on. We had the park all for ourselves and had a good time strolling around the river and catching glimpses of the buildings near by. Had to climb down few stairs from the street level to get to the park. Car parking was on the streets.

Saiprabhu B — Google review

I really enjoy walking through this place during the day, at night, and even during waterfire events. Its soo beautiful and chill and the mall is right there and a few cool places like Cafe Nuvo, Capital Grill, Jacky’s, etc. If you follow the canal it leads you to the Providence bay and the pedestrian bridge, if you go under the tunnel KP and downtown Providence, and the street opposite facing the mall leads you to the train station/Amtrak/MBTA. The gondola can be so romantic and perfect for a date, but theres also a nice kayaking spot. And… its free just to hangout and have a picnic.A extra bonus is the fact the field where the 4th of July fireworks is right there and the state house is also very visible 🙂

Carlos L — Google review

Waterfire is a must see if you're lucky enough to be in Providence when the event is happening. Tons of people. Can hardly move when walking on the level of the river. 2 stages for live entertainment. Lots of vendors. Definitely a must see.

Museums

Non-profit organization

The Providence Children's Museum is a place where children of all ages can explore and learn through active play. From the Innovation Lab to the Thinkspace, there are plenty of fun places for kids to spend time in this unique museum.

This is a great little stop for kids about 10 and under! They can touch everything! In fact, they are expected to play with the props while the parent either reads a few little signs or just plays with them, learning about early Rhode Island history. Such a cool place, not to mention the water room. My kids loved it so much over the years. I am now happy to bring my granddaughter there!

Had a great day at the children's museum with my 4 year old nephew. He really enjoyed all aspects of the museum but the water section in the first floor was definitely his favorite. As an adult, my favorite part was he autumnal crafts on the second floor. Being Cape Verdean, I was so excited to see the little education section of the Nellie Mae ship coming to America from Cape Verde and I was able to relate it back to our family for my nephew. Lots to see and do at the museum, the staff was amazing, the building was very clean, and it wasn't too crowded on a Friday afternoon.

We love PCM and come here almost every weekend. Rain or shine, it is such a great place for our 18 month old!! She gets to truly explore and learn through play here, and as a result we are seeing major growth in her conceptual understanding of the world around her. For young children, I definitely recommend coming back several times so that they can most from these exhibits... spring for the membership if you can! It's a great deal, and so enriching.

Mikahla D — Google review

Super super cute children’s museum. I went with a 9 and 11-year-old and they had a really good time. There were a lot of younger kids around toddler age probably. But the older kids still have a very good time. The water area was definitely a big hit.

Daisy L — Google review

Really amazing place both kids loved this place and spent 2.5 hours there and complained when we had to leave. Upstairs they have these rooms each with a theme of people coming to Rhode Island in the pilgrim times. Downstairs is an amazing water play area. It was my daughter's birthday today and they made an announcement over the speakers that it was her birthday, which she loved. Staff was super friendly, pricing was very cheap. Loved it alot

WOW, what an excellent experience for our family! We have 2 young boys and they loved every minute of this museum. There were lots of different areas to learn and play in as well as exhibits between each. You can be a masonry, work on a ship, market worker, and many more. There were ample bathrooms all around the museum to change diapers, use bathroom, ect. There was even an entire water room to play in which was my kids absolute favorite part. I think we spent almost an hour there. I do recommend you wear a bathing suit for the star room if you kids like to play in water tables. The museum truly understands what it means to be a children's museum, if we lived closer we would be there all the time. Great staff too, keep up the great work and donate if you can give anything to help them out!

Dallas G — Google review

Nothing but good to say about this museum. There were lots of fun, interactive games and objects for children to play with. There were areas for building things, a water room, air tubes, a little tree house, an outdoor section with little caves, fish tanks and all kinds of things with which my toddler could interact. He loved running up and down the ramps leading to the second story. The staff was friendly and welcoming as well and the museum was of moderate size. Similar to the size of most children's museums but I've definitely seen larger. I went when crowds were small but I'm sure the place gets packed, so make sure to go early. It's nice that it has free, dedicated parking which is always a plus in the city.

David M — Google review

We went with our 3 and 1.5 year old kids and they had the best time! It is small enough that it isn’t overwhelming and big enough to keep them entertained for good 3-4 hours. It also has tons of windows so you don’t feel like you are stuck in a building/inside all day. They additionally have a small outside play area. We went on a Friday and the place was not at all crowded. The staff was very friendly. If you kids need snack - take them with you…I don’t think there is anything you can really buy there. I definitely recommend going there if you have young kids or toddlers (although all the adults were enjoying themselves too feeling like kids again).

Aesha J — Google review

Great busy place for small kids, probably ip to 7-8, our 6 years old had a blast. A lot if kids 1-2 years old with their own place to crawl and explore.Small area outside to explore as well.Otherwise, if you want your kids to stay occupied for a few hours , come and enjoy.Affordable entrance prices for adults and kids!

Nadezda M — Google review

What a fantastic day at the kid's museum 🎨. My grandson had tons of fun 👍🏻 so didn't my daughter. And poppa had a ball 🏀...

Magnum P — Google review

Fun place with many interactive and engaging playing toys for kids. There was a specific area for kids lesser than 4 yrs old and has a party room as well which was being used for a Birthday party.Kids were really intrigued and had fun time in activities involving water play, imaginative and innovative play using basic science concepts that engage kids in problem solving nd critical thinking. It has historical role play area as well. There is sufficient parking on site and near by. There are lockers and stroller parking area as well.Fun 3 hrs for kids, we will surely be visiting again.

Anees F — Google review

Fun activity full of history. It is a little small compared to other Children's museums, but they pack a lot of stations in there. The staff were friendly and the facilities were clean.

Esther K — Google review

The kids had alot of fun. The water room was AMAZING, we spent probably two hours in their alone.

Colette S — Google review

Went on a Sunday and it was very busy. All of the children were having a good time. Parking is a challenge but I believe the meters are not monitored on Sundays

Daniel M — Google review

We really enjoyed our time here, the staff is very friendly and make an effort to talk to and interact with the children instead of just speaking directly with only the adults. The crafts are always fun and my kids learn something new every time we go. It can be frustrating when older children are playing a bit rough and some parents sit and lounge in work spaces/play areas and kids get discouraged from interacting with those things, so try to be mindful of your surroundings but other than that it is always a good experience and promotes all sorts of different learning and play styles.

Samantha Z — Google review

Definitely enjoyed the day. love the hands-on activities. Even better when we can do them together and learn at the same time. We will be back again.

Jessica L — Google review

Worth the trip. We were staying 45 minutes away, and our two young children had a wonderful time. We stayed for 2 hours, and that seems like a reasonable time frame. Recommend that you get there 10-15 minutes early during holiday weeks, or weekends as the parking lot gets slammed. A historic setting only about 5 minutes from Brown University.

Gabe C — Google review

Friendly and helpful staff. We only had a short visit but we had a great time! They have different activities appropriate for all ages. Today we visited for the first time to celebrate my baby boy's 1st birthday!

Melina P — Google review

A wonderful little museum for children to play and explore. Featuring many hands-on activities that teach history and science in a fun and educational way. You’re little ones will have fun here and they WILL want to play with the water. The museum is designed mainly for children ages baby through 12 and the employees are friendly

Miguel R — Google review

So, google asks if there was a wait. I didn’t have one when we went. But, I could see it happening. It is geared for kids toddler to early school age. 2-6 or 7. Maybe 8. It has a water play room, a drawing/ art room. About a dozen areas inside for general play with some toys. Blocks and puzzle like. It has a handful of theme rooms that are pretty cool. Like a pirate room and grocery store room. Also a real good partially covered outdoor area. As for price. It is 15 or so per each person. Kid or adult. Making it much more likely to do the 1 year membership as that is like 3-4 visits. They do not charge for children under 1. Good place. Would recommend. Will go again.

Museums

The RISD Museum is a major art museum housed in 5 buildings on the campus of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. The museum has collections from many different artists, including pieces by famous French Impressionists, ancient Egyptian sculptures, American paintings from the 18th century to contemporary works, and much more. The museum is very large and has many galleries with priceless paintings.

Unbelievably large collection of interesting and unique art. I get bored quickly in art museums but this sprawling collection had so many diverse collections; every room was a new medium to explore! Lots of impressive pieces to recognize juxtaposed with unknowns to discover. I loved it!

Dee K — Google review

I really liked the museum! It was bigger and better than I expected! Good collections! Loved the signs with artists' names and texts, placed next to paintings - they did a great job! It was interesting to read and learn!I loved the room with European icons and religious sculptures. Many objects were 1000 years old. I loved seeing them!European art of XVIII and XIX centuries was very nice! The collection of American art was great! Interesting room with textiles.Highly recommend to visit! Loved the cafeteria in the museum, too! 👍

I loved this museum. Designed to inspire RISD students in their studies? It's compact and covers 6 floors. Spent most of the day here with a friend. It was so satisfying - inspiring, intriguing, stimulating and thought provoking. Modern and Contemporary; New Media; Prints, Drawings and Photographs; European; Ancient Greek and Roman; Ancient Egyptian; Costume and Textiles; Asian; American; Decorative Arts and Design. Here are some photos of my favorites. Entry is $20. Free on Sundays.

Julie G — Google review

It was an amazing museum! I didn't expect there to be so many different floors full of treasures. We spent about 3 hours and I felt like we rushed. We went on a Sunday when it was free and there were lots of people, but it wasn't crazy. The woman at the front was extremely helpful and gave us tips on how to view everything.Definitely a must see when in the area!I added some of my favorite pictures ❤

Kedron I — Google review

Visiting the RISD Museum was a remarkable and free art experience. I spent a captivating 4 to 5 hours exploring the exhibits and can't wait to return. It was incredibly enjoyable to discover a wide range of art, both from professional artists and students. The informative descriptions added a depth of cultural insight to my visit. I was pleasantly surprised to find free entry, possibly because it was a Sunday, and I didn't need to inquire further. If you have a passion for art, this museum is an absolute must-visit.

Reetu — Google review

Excellent smaller art museum. Permanent collections are wonderful - Roman, Greek, Egyptian and European artwork as well as lovely furniture collections. Have seen many thought provoking, interesting exhibits here over the years with a wide variety of media and messages. My favorite place to visit in Providence. The shop is a gem too - located across the street from Main St entrance.

Lisa F — Google review

Much larger and more interesting place than just looking from the outside. The museum connects like four buildings in various walkways, ramps, stairs, and bridges. We ended up spending like two hours here and could have easily spent the entire day.

Edwin Y — Google review

A great spot. Certain days are free, I believe it was Thursday night and Sunday all day. There’s a small waiting area when you enter. Large, different everywhere. A nice museum with a lot of variety to it.It is kind of like a confusing maze though so it’s best if you have a lot of time to spend here. Hard to park in this area. They have little free cubby lockers and places to put your belongings and jackets.

Nicole G — Google review

There are some amazing works here. And the museum is really big, from the outside it may look small but there are so much to see and explore. Definitely a cool place to check out!

Jing M — Google review

This is a gem, fabulously rich collection. Absolutely stunning pieces, great light. Staff is very very kind. We went on a Sunday, it was free, and it is wonderful to be in a museum which is popular. Want to go back.

Thomas R — Google review

Fantastic museum in the heart of downtown providence! Free on Sundays, take your time winding through 3+ floors with many rooms. Everything from modern art to a sarcophagus, textiles, and everything in between. Take a break at the coffee shop (accessible from inside the museum as well) and then power on through the museum.

G S — Google review

I was surprised by the size of the museum, does not look as large form outside. Collection is very Electric so you will find something you like for sure.Free on Sunday and 20USD other days. Street parking.

Pil G — Google review

I was pleasantly surprised, and enjoyed visiting the museum. I wondered all the floors.I will to return in warmer weather to enjoy some of the outdoor sitting areas.Free on Sundays is a wonderful thing.

Justina — Google review

A beautiful art museum. It is not only paintings or pictures, also ceramic art and furniture pieces and more. Some modern pieces from the current and past students can also be seen. I highlighted some German art, but there is something from lots of countries. There is a sitting room where you can read some of the art books while there. What is also great is that it is free on Sundays and some evenings. Please check the website. There is a cafe at the museum that is open to the public. There are lockers for your backpacks since they aren't allowed in, but not many. On the other hand there are lots of restrooms.

Parking was the only issue; great museum to see one time; verity of painters

Hamburger restaurant

Harry's Bar & Burger is a hamburger restaurant that serves up some of the best burgers in the world. They have four different locations around Rhode Island, and offer delicious trimmings such as locally-grown produce. If you're in the mood for a burger, this is your spot!

Great shakes and sliders. Loved the sweet potato fries with the green aoli.Didn't drink that day but would come back to try some of the beers they have on tap.

Teo P — Google review

After exploring Downtown Providence for the first time, my husband and I were looking for a place for dinner. After scanning through the menu, I figured that I could find something that was gluten free as I have Celiac disease.Restaurant has street parking so don't count on snagging a spot out front. We walked and it was so convenient from Roger Williams National Memorial. The dining area downstairs was small and full so we were seated upstairs. The steps are steep and I felt bad for the poor waitress who had to keep running up and down with plates of food.Dining room was a bit meh? I don't know. Could have been a bit cleaner. Our table was sticky and there were random supplies stored on another table in the dining room. It was also very dark so it felt spooky until more people were seated upstairs with us.Waitress was nice when I said I needed gluten free items. She said chicken wings and fries were off the menu for me as they're in a shared fryer that contains gluten. I appreciated that she knew that as so many other restaurants don't know about fryer cross contamination.Prices are super fair which is nice for the college kids in the area. I was only able to have a burger bowl which is pretty typical when it comes to eating at American restaurants as a Celiac. If you're price sensitive and you need something quick to eat, this place is a good choice.

The burger is really good, MAAB is one order two small burgers. Onion strings sauce has cinnamon, very nice. Chili dog is also good. They has special deal 3-5pm the burger is 50% off.

Food was absolutely delicious! I had the Fungus Among Us Sliders with the Haystack Onion Strings which was excellent. My boyfriend had the Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders with Salt & Pepper Fries which he enjoyed. The sliders do come with pickles automatically so if you don’t care for pickles make sure you let them know beforehand. I also had the Tiki Mojito which was both refreshing and tasty! Will go back definitely!

Lulu R — Google review

The hamburgers are amazing! The beef is fresh, and toppings are delicious. Our fries were hot and fresh straight from the fryer. The waiter was friendly and checked in on us. We will definitely be back again .

Super cool place. We’re from out of town and this place was great and hit the spot. We’re greeted as soon as we walked in the door. Helped and served quickly. Funky vibe with awesome sliders and beers. Some of the best sweet potatoes fries I’ve ever had. Would certainly come again. Thanks for a good experience!!

Emily W — Google review

Very cozy bar. Very delicious burgers. I tried the Fungus Among Us, asked them to add grilled onions to it, and it was AMAZING! 😋 🤤 Each burger order comes in two small burgers (two sliders) for about $5.5 total. Great value. They have upstairs area as well as an area downstairs, so a lot of room. And super friendly staff. Will go back for more.

Mahsa — Google review

Claims the have the best burgers in the country. Their burgers are in slider form.. White Castles style. Just a little bigger and better quality meat. Almost has a similar flavor to white castle though. Not complaining about the food. It was good but not the best.

Sduk3406 — Google review

The music playing was amazing however, the food was a little too grassy. The milkshakes are good but they were not cold. For two sliders and a milkshake I paid $20, so, not very expensive.

Isabela L — Google review

I went here for the first time over the weekend and it was absolutely delicious! Definitely lived up to the hype.We ordered plain fries and also an order “make it sloppy” both were great. Fries were crispy and adequately coveted with toppings. For burgers we ordered “M.O.A.B” and “Crunch Burger.” Messy, so have napkins close by, but tasted phenomenal! Will definitely come back in the future.

Cassandra D — Google review

Had an excellent fried chicken slider and a cheeseburger slide. Excellent taste. Also ordered a side of fries. Great service. Great location. It’s almost like a hole in the wall Gem.

Mike M — Google review

It's a small place, always busy, especially for take out. They have a half priced special menu between 3-5. Please check with Restaurant. They do have some tables outside, too. Excellent service by the bartender, friendly and engaging. This time, I had the cauliflower. It was excellent. I had the MOAB sliders before, and the fifty-fifty fries, shoe strings onion rings before, and they are really good.Another great visit for takeout, but whiöe waiting I had a drink at the bar. Take out Pastrami burger and turkey burger. Both were excellent.

Anita M — Google review

Damn good burgers (sliders) 🍔 Note that the burgers are indeed sliders, not a burger! Comes with 2 but I suggest getting 3 as sliders are small. Local joint, friendly and attentive staff, great food. Limited seating as it's a small location but don't let that stop you from going! We got the bacon cheeseburger and buffalo chicken. Did not notice the blue cheese much, so I suggest asking for extra but their buffalo sauce? Amazing 👏 Actually has that great vinegar taste and HEAT. Always hesitant to order something buffalo flavored because the heat is usually lacking but not here. Harry's understood the assignment. Highly recommended trying!! 👌 Also got the Downeast cider and the gin gimlet (favorite). Great little spot for burger sliders, fries and a drink!

Carrie M — Google review

Excellent service, nice Bartender and great food. Had the regular Cheeseburger and half sweet potato fries and half onion strings. It’s a small place just about 6 siesta at the bar and a few tables, but worth it. They also do takeout which was a constant for this place.Even though it was really busy and the bartender busy serving the whole place he had time to make conversation. The food came fast and hot.

Anita M — Google review

OMG exactly what I was craving. I don't even know why it's been so long since we went back here! Every burger is so delicious. My favorite thing is those sweet potato fries with the kryptonite aioli YUM! It's a small cozy spot and that's what I love! The bartender was super sweet and attentive.

Sights & Landmarks

The RISD is a world-renowned art school that offers undergraduate and graduate programs in art, design, architecture, engineering, and media. The school's campus is located in Providence, Rhode Island.

I received my mrs degree here in 2012 to a guy a couple years my junior in everything but earnings. I do believe my degree prepared me with the critical mind to discern between silk and polyester as well as truth and bull ****.In all seriousness, this is a wonderful school for those who know what they want to do, but need to be challenged to be more exacting and deliberate. All of my peers in design fields landed excellent jobs almost right away and have continued to succeed post graduation, husband included.I would stay away from the fine art programs unless you are independently wealthy, but that's always been the case for all of human history.

Free Play Bar Arcade is a 21+ bar in downtown Providence that offers free classic arcade games, beer on tap, and pizza. The bar reopened recently after being closed for renovations and offers a unique atmosphere with classic facades and columns.

We had a BLAST!! Brought back so many memories, it was like being back in DG's arcade!!You pay a $7 cover (mon-thurs) and play till you drop!If you're gonna drink, bring your big boy wallet because this is how they make their money!

Tim K — Google review

What a great time! $7 to get in. I’ve been to plenty of places like this and usually it’s every 3rd game is out of order and it’s gross. This was clean, and all games worked well! The beer selection is good and the co*cktails are quite creative. For those that are interested there are a bunch of rhythm games, including modern stuff I’ve never seen. Overall a really great experience.

Rob C — Google review

Glad to see this place reopened!I find Free Play Bar Arcade to be a solid attraction if you're looking for a fun night out with a nice variety of games. We came here after dinner on a Saturday evening and didn't have to wait, but by the time we left at around 9, it was busy. If you don't want to wait to play some popular games, I'd recommend coming here somewhat early! They have a good selection of games ranging from old classics to more modern games and the price is reasonable.Overall, I will definitely be coming back.

Free Play is Super Chill and fun atmosphere for 21+ retro gaming! It's also only a 7$ cover charge.I didn't drink anything so I'm not sure how reasonable the alcohol is or not unfortunately. There are also some real relics in here so make sure to take the time to walk around a few times and make sure you catch everything.

10$ for unlimited games on a Saturday night is pretty cool! There's pinball, skeeball, racing, shooting, air hockey! Old and new games! And a bar.February 2024 update : 12$ now on weekends, 7$ otherwise. Definitely worth the price for all the games!

Tracy M — Google review

Our 1st time at free play was Sunday for my son's birthday. I love that it was family free play from 11-4. A little crowded for the baby but we did just fine, security was weird bout bringing in food for an infant. But that was our only issue. The pizza was amazing

Diamond O — Google review

What a gem! For only $7 per person you get to play all these awesome old time favorites fo as long as you want. Great date night. Fair warning the drinks are a bit pricy and their pizza was terrible. It was partially burnt, we were only able to eat the very middle circle because a thick part of the crust was just too hard so would not eat there again but would definitely go back. Friendly staff. Clean place. Highly recommend it, just eat before or after.

I have come to this place 3 times and at first I wasn't a huge fan, but last night I changed my mind they have karaoke here sat night and omg it's a lot of fun! They have a huge stage and also play karaoke bingo! I had the best time singing and playing bingo. The bartenders here are awesome very fast and sufficient. awesome customer service and loads of fun. I hear the mixed drinks are good as well but I just drink fireball so can't say much about that. oh Friday live bands as well. pretty awesome place I must say. 12 to get in can't beat it.

What a fun time this place is! We really enjoyed being able to play skee ball, air hockey, pac man, racing games, etc. it was such a blast and it is pretty cheap as all you have to pay is $10 per person on the weekend. The drinks were also fairly priced. Overall, this place is a nice experience!

FreePlay is the place to go! Lots of of fun arcade games, dance floor, smoking area, the best air hockey community and they have the BEST customer service. The bartenders always serve with a smile, and one specifically, Daren, saw that I got injured off the air hockey table and went out of his way to find the best medical supplies around and doctored me up. 11/10 place, you have to go!

We recently rented Free Play out for my nephew's 12th birthday party, and the kids had a blast! It was a fun time for the adults too! I've been here a few times before while out with friends, and while I don't go to Providence often, this is the place I recommend to everyone. The games are nostalgic, the atmosphere is good-old fashion fun, and the staff are super nice! Zara, our bartender was fantastic, the drinks she made were absolutely perfect! Anthony, the owner, was so accommodating and so helpful with our party. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Had a great time here. It is a one time entrance fee to play whatever you want. They have plenty of different arcade machines, DDR, Pinball machines, and a couple of air hockey tables. It's definitely worth the cost of entry as you can easily spend hours here.

This place was SO FUN!!! I was surprised that it cost $7 to enter but was incredibly pleased to learn that all the games are included with the cost of entry. The name may have given it away but I didn’t realize. There were so many options and so many games to play. The machines were all really well maintained. It was really cool to try games I wouldn’t normally want to pay to play.I wish there was a NYC location, I’d go there in a heartbeat.

For example my friends and I beat the entire Simpsons game while we were there. Absolutely worth checking out! Can't comment on the food though, haven't tried it but I definitely will at some point.

Entry price is pretty cheap and the booze selection is great. So many amazing games however we arrived around 815 and by 9 the place got so packed it was really hard to find a game to play. They should limit the people inside. 2nd floor has a dance floor & music, when we went it was karaoke. Place needs more tables just for sitting and talking.

Italian restaurant

Bacaro is a contemporary Italian restaurant on the waterfront of Downtown Providence with a full-service dining room, wine bar, and tapas bar. The restaurant has two different menus: one for traditional Italian cuisine, with salads, appetizers, entrees, etc., and another for innovative dishes you can build your own charcuterie board with. Bacaro offers views of the riverfront and is situated in Fox Point on the precipice of traditional Italian and modern fine dining.

Went for NYE and everything was outstanding. I love the beginning with a notepad where you check off all the small bites you want to enjoy. Entrees were excellent and service very attentive. The bolognese was well done. Only disappointment was dessert. Our large group did 4 of them and all were lacking / unimpressive.

Owen B — Google review

Best meal I’ve had in Providence. The Arancini stole the show with stop-the-conversation amazing taste and left me happy for days. Definitely order this. Maybe order two servings. The chef slightly overcooked the Duck Breast, but I really enjoyed the dish overall. I would (will) order them again.Avoid the Foie Gras with jam. The foie gras is sub par — a bit tasteless and bad texture— and the jam completely overpowers the dish. Our server Joey was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Zachary D — Google review

Excellent meal! Love it when I can find perfectly grilled octopus...although my friend would not go near it...LOL! Both of us loved our meals from starters through dessert. Our server Joe was fantastic and he endured my friend's request for a "digestive" with grace ....otherwise known as an "after dinner drink" to the rest of us.

Michelle B — Google review

I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO START! Everything just makes me so happy. I would definitely make Baccaro my go to if I still live in Providence. You will not regret dining here whether it is with a couple of friends or with a large party. The service here is amazing. All the staffs are super friendly and accommodating. And the food - omg. I don’t recall the name of the dish but the foie gras on the small toast with jam was above and beyond. My entire group got 2 more rounds after we tried it out. It just melts in your mouth. Perfect amount of saltiness and sweetness. PERFECTION. And the pastas were amazing too. My personal favorite is the Pasto Con I Funghi. The Egg yolk ties all the flavors together. We doubled up on this dish when we dined there. And for desserts, we got the Lemon Meringue Tart. It was the dessert we needed - light, refreshing, but still filling. I’m so glad we booked Baccaro two months in advance. We had such a great night here💕 Thank you Baccaro!!!

Naco S — Google review

I loved dining at Bacaro! The Cioppino was really good, but honestly the shrimp tasted a little fishy and I wish there had been a couple more scallops in it. I really liked the mussels, squash blossoms, and bruschetta. The Bellini was just alright. But overall, this was a fabulous meal with great service and a relaxing atmosphere! I would highly recommend for an upscale meal.

Lexi P — Google review

I will say The atmosphere is nice and we had a great table on the second floor overlooking the city. After that things were a bit downhill. Our server was very nice but not on her game by any means. We never got two of us sides and I had a very bad reaction to the cioppino. Not in a rush to go back. I did notify the restaurant of the potential bad food and they said it was too soon for me to have a reaction. But they would let the kitchen know. Which is not true based on the health department.

Mark S — Google review

From the cheese board appetizer and the Margharita pizza to the duck confit main course, everthing was amazing and cooked to perfection! This was my first visit and I can't wait to go back. The service was excellent too!

Joe E — Google review

Went here for a joint birthday dinner based off a family recommendation. And I can say that I was highly disappointed. Service took a long time such as getting our check back taking 20 minutes. The best food we got was the pizza we got as an appetizer. That alone is bumping up this rating a whole star. Beyond that the food was just average and in my opinion over priced. To me the worst part was the atmosphere or lack there of. The only things on the walls were the two masks on the first floor where we did not stay. I am definitely not coming back.

Harrop — Google review

Superior in every aspect!!!!! Went with a large party. We were able to try several appetizers, entrees, and desserts. All were favorites. The only food left untouched was the bread, which was fortunate because the portions were large. Service was similarly excellent. Left talking about going back.

Dale D — Google review

Service was absolutely wonderful, even on a busy Saturday night. Food was outstanding from Caesar salads and pizza app to the main meals (including salmon/pasta special and chicken marsala). Dessert was a different story. Four of us shared the peanut butter cup and warm chocolate brownie. We were all disappointed in both and even left some behind.

Marcie L — Google review

Stunning food, authentic to the core. Lovely Rhode Island pizza followed by beautiful pasta. Superb Barbaresco and amarone with a fine white to start. Faultless

Thanjakumar A — Google review

The people at the front desk are beyond rude. When you call, when you come in - they act like they don’t want to be there and they don’t want anyone coming through the doors like we are wasting their time. I was there over the weekend, I had a reservation for 9pm. I got there and the girls at the front were rude, looking at each other in front of me and giving each other looks and they say “just letting you know we close at 10pm” I said “Ok well it’s 9pm. We have time.” Again, they looked at each other gave each other a look and seated me and my friend. These girls look like they are in high school just miserable about working on the weekend and don’t want to deal with anyone. I mean if you want to close at 9pm and stop serving people do that then but you’re giving guests a bad impression on closing at 10pm and not really wanting to serve people beyond 9pm. Weird, it’s business you should be grateful. The food is amazing and my waiter was awesome and very attentive but for the front of house, get some new people.

Lindsay T — Google review

First time here ! Heard great things about the pasta and cheeseboards. The food was perfect. We enjoyed everything we ordered. However our waitress was very very slow. She seemed almost like she couldn't be bothered serving us. My bf asked for an IPA sample which took extremely long to come out. the waitress didn't even come back promptly to see if he wanted to order. She hardly checked on us. I also asked for a second glass of wine with my dessert and by the time she brought my wine .. our dessert was well gone.

Crystal S — Google review

We had a very large party and our service and food were exceptional. Thank you!!

Mon M — Google review

Twice did I visit this place. My closest buddies and I went out to supper the first time. The second floor had excellent surroundings and a lovely outlook. Before moving on to the steak with wonderful sauce, we ordered a few Italian appetizers first.Although we requested medium cook, the only thing I regret is that the streak was slightly overcooked. However, it was incredibly satisfying all around. My second visit took place at 5 p.m. with my husband and our 5-year-old son for a late dinner. This time, we also sat down at the table on the second floor. My son didn't want any green on his Margarita pizza, so I asked for basil to be put aside when we ordered it.Nevertheless, there was a misunderstanding between my server and the kitchen. They all therefore arrived on the pizza. I was asked whether I wanted new by my server. But since we didn't want to wait any longer, we opted to keep it.It was delicious simple pasta that my husband requested.

EZ — Google review

We had a good experience at Bacaro two years ago and was looking forward to returning. However this time was a disappointment. Service was mediocre at best, we walked in at 5:00 with a reservation. The restaurant was almost completely empty and no one on the second floor except us. after we complained about the first table being right at the ac vent. The waiter told us they are fully booked tonight and couldn’t seat us anywhere but downstairs. No one refilled out water the whole night. Food has gone down the hill as well. They even served us with a broken dish. We are very disappointed and will not return again.

My girlfriend and I celebrated our first year together with a gondola ride in Providence. This memorable experience was made complete with the wonderful violinist. The ride is 40 minutes and we had such a great time that it felt like 10

Peter H — Google review

I booked this for me and my mom on mother's day weekend and we loved it! We had two gondoliers with us, one a younger man and the other a younger woman, both extremely nice and personable, answered any questions we had, but most of all their voices when they sang were so beautiful!! The young woman offered me and my a blanket to keep warm before we set off because it was a very windy day and she saw we were a bit cold, I thought that was very nice! They give you biscuits to try which we didn't until we got home the next day and they were actually really good, sweet but not to sweet. This is a once and a lifetime experience, I definitely recommend booking a trip with them when your in Providence next time!

ELOCIN R — Google review

One of the most unique experiences in Providence! I thoroughly enjoyed the gondola ride, and Marcello was incredible :) I was with my best friend and we enjoyed our drinks and the complimentary biscuits were so good we went back to the bakery too! Highly recommend supporting Marcello, and his fellow gondoliers :) it was perfect, I would love to do it again.

It was breathtaking very nice for me and my boyfriend for his birthday, they give you some wine biscuits and they have wine, glasses, and ice and everything ready for you and umbrella. In case it rains and a blanket in case you’re cold overall this is a really very nice Experience, they even saying to us under the bridge. It was so beautiful. I would definitely highly recommend doing this

Kara H — Google review

This was river ride was a great break from the crazy parking and bustle of downtown. The river is below the street so there was virtually no road noise, making for a serene mini adventure. The staff was very nice and knew a lot about the buildings and history of the river and town. Our gondolier was also a great singer. We enjoyed the songs and under bridge acoustics during our ride very much.

Kevin B — Google review

Wonderful service and great experience. I've taken 2 trips with them and each time was memorable. I suggest getting the ride with music. You can choose mandolin, violin or guitar. Your gondolier will also sing at various points in the trip. Will definitely be visiting again.

Douglas M — Google review

The experience was unique for sure. The staff was attentive and accommodating. The water was very dirty and unpleasant however. There could be a clean up organized and it would be a much better experience. In addition I believe the value for the money is not worth it. Almost $200 for a family of 5 for 30 minutes. I think $125 would have been a fair price. We brought own drinks and there was little engagement from our guide.

Yvonne B — Google review

Beyond the most romantic experience I’ve ever had! The entire team showed us a fantastic time! We even had a private violinist! A magical experience for sure! Lastly, the pink champagne Italian biscuits were delicious and complimented our champagne perfectly!

Wonderful old-world boat ride 🛶 experience that tours through central downtown Providence. The paddler guide also sings opera 🎶 while you sit back and relax. Was visiting with family and this was a pleasant experience. Highly recommend this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏼

We had a fabulous ride, even better than expected. Definitely make a reservation and get their 15 minutes before your time - they will take you early if able. We enjoyed our drinks, but were too busy enjoying the ride to eat so we went for a picnic afterwards.

Had the most relaxing time on the gondola ride after a long eventful day on our first trip to Providence. Marcello was our gondolier and I am so thankful we had the pleasure of riding with him, he serenaded with classics in the most beautiful voice. Special thanks to Marcello for making our late night ride just perfect.

Areej M — Google review

Giovanni was so great as our host for the Gondola. It was beautiful and we all loved it.

Shamra T — Google review

Unique, scenic experience in Providence. Marcello was great. The complimentary biscuits were a nice touch. We had our own drinks and they provided glasses. They have drinks available also though. Highly recommend this experience. It was sad to see some trash in the river but overall a great way to see that piece of Providence.

We learned of the La Gondola in Providence from a TV series called Providence. Looked it up as we were looking for a late summer trip. The web site was easy to use. It was very informative. We were able to schedule a Sunday appointment during the day time 4 days in advance. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We highly recommend this opportunity. Lovely city and a nice river front. The ride was wonderful. The gondeleer provided a good tour and has a marvelous singing voice. We rode in a genuine Venetian gondola. It is a beautiful vessel with remarkable details.

Jeffrey S — Google review

Absolutely best thing we did in Providence! It gave us both a little bit of what we loved. Me.. the history and my boyfriend found a common interest with our gondolier, Gennaro and enjoyed that conversation! The water was calm and the weather perfect. When Gennaro pulled over and sang with a voice of an angel under the bridges.. I was dreaming (and feeling) like I was in Europe.. Thank you for the most amazing experience ever!

Maria V — Google review

We are spending our honeymoon in Rhode Island and this was the perfect addition to our trip! Our gondolier, Rosario was a very talented singer and he kindly shared the history of Providence with us. I highly recommend booking!

It was a beautiful and a romantic moment. Our Gondolaier Ronaldo, (I am not confident if I have the name right, but know I am close lol). He was absolutely amazing!!!! His singing made the moment so romantic. This was my first time but would definitely recommend him. The time we went was perfect, (4:55) on a waterfire night. When we was on our way to the dock the waterfire was starting. So you can say it was a perfect night, until we got lost there and back from the car. 🤣🥂

Christine A — Google review

Had an amazing night, in the light drizzleThe gondola ride was so awesome and I was lucky to be with a gorgeous woman inside and out. I definitely recommend it and do it again in a heartbeat. Tomasso was wonderful and had a beautiful voice. The biscuits were great and it's such a nice gondola. One part of the ride is dark cover under the bridge so we were dry for quite a while and of course you must kiss at least once!

Eric S — Google review

So, we didn't actually take one of the tours, but two of the Gondola guides made an impression on me as I watched them pass us in our kayaks on the river Sunday afternoon. The 1st gentleman was giving a great tour and putting all the effort into giving his riders a memorable experience. The 2nd fellow.....? Well, as you can see, minimal effort as I watched him for at least 5 minutes as he texted or whatever he was doing on his phone. Not one I would want to get if I paid for a tour!! Certainly, one who wouldn't earn much of a tip!

The Roger Williams National Memorial Visitor Center houses exhibits on the founder of Providence and his beliefs in Freedom of Religion. The visitor center is located in downtown Providence, close to other attractions like Waterfire and the TD Bank building. If you're looking for a great place to spend an afternoon, this is it!

This is a nice park. There are several markers with information about Roger Williams and his part of the history of the area. The park has shorter days open. We didn't plan ahead, and the visitor center wasn't open, but a Ranger let me get my stamp for my National Park Passport and told me about Slater Mill.**This park has the Junior Ranger program and the Bark Ranger program.

Beautiful, well maintained park managed by the National Park Service. Conveniently located in downtown Providence. Walking distance to the State House Train Station, Providence Mall, shops along South Main Street and many more sightseeing landmarks. This is great for single people, couples, families with children and dogs. Every so often they have a dog poop dispenser. The walkways are brick lined and there are some beautiful stately trees and flowery bushes. A lush open grassy field along with plenty of park benches throughout and picnic tables located near the park store. Tremendous amount of history as depicted by the markers along the walk that provide info from 1636 when Roger Williams came to Rhode Island as a minister and then going forward to date. They have a park store that provides further information along with some souvenirs. If you visit their website by googling Roger Williams National Memorial you will see so much more information regarding education and culture along with events that take place in the park such as Piano in the Park, Photo Exhibits as there will be a calendar depicting each event. There are volunteer services available and so much more. Their website has a plethora of information.

This is a lovely spot! Well maintained and accessible, the park is beautiful and and a great spot to walk around or have a bite to eat. You can also see the site of the spring that provided fresh water to the settlers. There is a small visitors center with an extremely nice Park Ranger. It had an exhibit and a short film.

Pretty little pocket park. To see there is the oldest house in Providence, and the site of the original spring for the town (it's now got concrete walls and has been capped. Also a lovely church across the street.

Nice spot to unwind have a coffee. For the locals anyway. I'm sure great spot for the tourist. Family fun educational, and a part of history. There's so much more then think. You could spend the day going back in history. Please donate to our national parks. They need to stay here forever. Hope everyone enjoys there time in the great capital City of Rhode Island. Providence has a lot to offer. Enjoy

Very interesting small museum. It has limited opening hours, but when open, there is a park ranger on duty. This is because the museum is located inside a national park. There are only 2 national parks in Rhode Island. The park is small, of course, in comparison but very beautiful. The rangers are very helpful and answer all questions. It tells the story of Roger Williams and so kind if of Rhode Island, too. There is a public restroom. And a small souvenir area.

Anita M — Google review

Great little Park. Lots of benches to sit on, enjoying the view, or feed the birds and squirrels. The museum was closed, but looks interesting.I went back and the Museum was open. A nice young man working in there answering lots of questions.

Nice park. It's a nice place to go to relax and read a book, maybe about Roger Williams. There are waysides around the park they tell about his life. He's story is interesting. Check out the National Park website about him for more information. I found him very interesting.

Judy M — Google review

The visitor center is small, but has some great information on Roger William's history and his 'lively experiment' in Rhode Island. He created a colony where people of all religions (or none) were accepted and set the foundation for a government that would not establish a state religion.I found it interesting that many of the early settlers who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe would turn around and persecute fellow settlers from different religions or with different ideas (roger williams was banished from Massachusetts colony because he was viewed as a troublemaker because of his ideas).

Ethan L — Google review

super rad exhibitquick walk around so definitely recommend coming with some food as it’s more of a spot rather than parkwe did ask for a junior park ranger booklet so if you want to learn more about providence and the united states in general definitely ask for it at the info desk !only downside is do not have very accessible hours.

Josue A — Google review

The only national park in Rhode Island (and the smallest one in the country), this place doesn’t look like much upon first glance. It’s a nice park, well-maintained and picturesque, but it’s very small for a national park and for the most part looks like any other park in the city. The cool part about this park is the history behind it. This is pretty much where Providence was founded, and Roger Williams lived very nearby. There’s a historic well, plenty of informational signs, and a wonderful visitor’s center. If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air or a stroll through a park, this is an alright option with plenty of better alternatives. If you want to learn more about the history of Providence and Rhode Island, there’s a lot to discover here.

The Stephen Hopkins House is a museum that displays artifacts and architecture from the 18th century. The house was built by Stephen Hopkins, who served as the governor of Rhode Island in the early 1700s. The museum is located on Benefit Street in Downtown Providence, and is open to the public daily from 9am to 4pm.

I would like to start my review with the tourist guide who actually invited us to visit this place. So, we were roaming around and guide asked us to take a look into that place and history related to it. Since i was visiting from Canada, i had no clue who Stephen Hopkins was but after the tour, I actually read a lot about him and his life experience. This house is a great place to visit if you’re interested to see how people used to live in colonial society. Everything related to Stephen Hopkins is still placed in that house and history is very interesting.

Y'know...I've been to my share of museums, and the long and short of it is this:1) The less crowded, the better2) The more hands on, the better3) The guide, if afforded the opportunity to have one, makes or breaks the whole thing. We got here at 10am (opening) on a scorching hot Saturday, and we were joined by only one other intrepid scholar. Check one in our museum-fun favor.Marjorie (the guide) took us right in. She kept apologizing for the heat, but her warmth and her candor was way more overwhelming. She is a gem and we had a delightful time learning about early Providence. Oh, and she let us carry the water pot...bro, we are PAMPERED with our plumbing and innoculations.Of note: I'm impressed with both this house and John Brown's house up the street for their willingness to engage with the stain of slavery head on in both exhibits. For any nerds like me and my lady out there, this is a fine hour spent in RI.Oh, and it's freaking FREE, so leave a good tip and sign the guestbook... otherwise, the grants stop coming in....sigh.

We had an awesome experience while taking a stroll through Providence's east side. We were offered a tour of the Stephen Hopkins House and were very impressed. Stephen Hopkins, one of the original signers of the declaration of Independence (learned that on the tour!) owned this house on the river before it was moved twice to where it is today. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable, taking us around the house and showing the beautiful furniture, colonial architecture, and sharing the incredible history associated with the house. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are walking down benefit street.

Historical landmark

The John Brown House Museum is a historical place museum that tells the story of early America through guided and audio tours. The mansion is beautiful and worth the trip alone just for the views, as it belonged to a former merchant who made his fortune in China Trade. There are also period decorations and antiques on display here that belonged to the Brown family.

Easy to find and a quick check in. It is self guided but audio available as well as info in each room. Docent available as needed as well. He was very knowledgeable in the family. Spent about 1 hr here and it was worth the time.

Christa D — Google review

The room about the ship Sally was especially informative. The house itself was beautiful. It was a pretty quick walkthrough for me, but $10 was definitely worth it. They also allow free admission to those with EBT and have informative and interactive audio and family guides online.

Ginger F — Google review

Visiting Providence, we were at a loss for what to do on a Monday afternoon. I found this place whilst trying to find a museum or something, and what a stroke of luck!! Touring the John Brown House turned out to be a very good time. It was educational, but also interesting (this is coming from a fun-loving, 30-something). We elected to walk around with a tour guide (no extra cost), and he was wonderful! Never boring. He gave the tour like he was telling a story. The house is beautiful and they let you wander about and take photos too. It was not busy when we went, and we spent about 2 hours there total.

Stace D — Google review

Not only was this house fun to see, but the staff is spread out in each area. So if you have a question you can ask. I was nice. Go early less of a crowd and more of a personal experience with the staff answering questions.

It was a nice place! People who come here can learn more about the history of John Brown and his family, how they lived, and their journey for Rhode Island.

Bartholomeus D — Google review

I unexpectedly enjoyed the John Brown House Museum. As a Black female, I ignorantly believed that I would feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. So far from the truth. It was fun reading the plaques under each exhibit and analyzing how those times connnected to the present or my own life. My favorite part was the section on John Brown's involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. I also thoroughly enjoyed the conversations the staff and I engaged in. They were able to answer any question I asked and extremely open to feedback on how they could continue to make the museum culturally appropriate for all. I recommend everyone visit this site.

Dani — Google review

A well-curated and well-maintained house museum. It not only tells the story of the Brown family and their property, but also explores connections to race, class, politics, and commerce in Rhode Island, America, and across the world. It’s not afraid to share “hard histories.” Additional exhibits explore other aspects of the state’s past. The museum manager, Mr. Hernandez, was very knowledgeable, thoughtful, and welcoming. Cheers to the Rhode Island Historical Society and its staff.

Exhibits were informative and well-curated. They also took the time to suggest many other Providence sites that would help us make the most of our visit.

Shopping mall

Shopping

The Providence Place Mall is a large, upscale shopping mall that sits on top of the Woonasquatucket River in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It features a variety of high-end stores and restaurants, as well as a multiplex cinema. The mall is popular with tourists and locals alike, and is always bustling with activity.

Very nice and open shopping mall with tons of stores to shop at. There's also a lot of food options which was nice because I figured a lot of places might still be closed down. The architecture of the mall was also really nice and open and so there was a nice feel to the place. Went to P.F. Chang's near the mall's entrance which was a great restaurant, but also came across Johnny Rockets and a few other restaurants in the food court.I was also surprised to see a Build-A-Bear Workshop here! They also have the classic stores like Macy's and Old Navy, but also a store called Boscov's which had really good prices, but doesn't exist in NYC which is where I live.Something to note is that some people were wearing masks and some people weren't and that was kind of how it went throughout the entire mall so I guess just wear masks if you're unvaccinated or if you're more comfortable wearing one, but when I went it was really confusing because it was like 50/50. I'm vaccinated, but it also felt weird to just walk into a store where all the employees were wearing masks and not wear one.

A very large shopping mall with something for everyone located in the heart of Providence. There are sit down restaurants as well as a food court if you are just looking for a snack or a quick meal. There are clothing stores, toy shops, candle stores, bath and shower products, and interactive shops such as build a bear and the Lego store. There is a parking garage attached for convenient parking.

Pretty nice and chill. Not too busy. They have a good selection of stores. Not too many food choices in the food court. Plenty if parking but expect a long wait on busy days. First 2 hours for parking free. You can pay at little kiosks at the exit of each floor on the mall or you can pay at the gate when you leave.

Went to this mall for the first time and I love it. There is TONS of variety in shops and little food spaces. Their Chinese station in the food court is to die for. The little vendors also have really cute items for not bad proves. Definitely love returning here!

Nice mall with lots of shops. It's a lot bigger inside than what it seems from outside. Lots of expensive things with close to nothing regular priced items including food court. But maybe it's normal in providence for everything to be expensive.

The worst part was construction around the place. As a visitor the signs were confusing. Ensure you are mindful of how to get into parking garage. The shops are nice but to many uncontrolled young people shouting. It was okay, brace yourself for a hassle. Third photo was a joke :)

Great shopping place with enough stores what I loved most was to find the boscov’s store where they had sale on almost everything, got myself a cast iron oven tray, some sheer curtains and a set of spoons, problem was the parking, took us 30 mins to get a parking and another 30 mins to exit, don’t understand why they have 3 lanes that end up merging to one ☹️

Pretty cool mall with lots of stores. 3 levels of shopping. It was nice to go to a mall that didn’t have failing stores or look decaying. Parking garage was intense but I don’t see how they could avoid that given where the mall is. $2.00 for parking if there for less than 5 hours. I liked that it could counter and then there was stuff to do besides shopping in the area.

This is a very large mall that does not appear to be going under anytime soon. I’ve been to many miles recently and this one still seems to be thriving with many stores and locations to find food in the food court. I think this is a great mall overall and you’ll find a great variety of stores here as they have over 150 still that remain.

As for the mall itself, I have seen many versions of it and many changes since it very first opened. Some periods of time it has been better and even a regular go to location.During 2010 to 2015 is when I hung out their with friends the most. Utilized restaurants, movies, and friendly browsing with friends or dates. But other time frames also had a regularity. In the past 4 years my main annual trip has been during the 12 or 13 days of Christmas 🎄. The Epiphany. We go to do our big annual shopping at Boscovs and this year we had fun. Usually find a few deals and leave happy! Now a regular tradition. What I currently do not like is the Japanese type restaurant in the food court that shorted us meat, particularly beef on our orders as I watched them pile up the orders of all others. But enjoy the Mall for future Holidays!! Thanks Boscovs!!

The store options are antiquated. And the mall seems very large from the outside but inside is a decent-sized mall. It took us three hours to go around all sections of the mall and eat in the mall. The attractions in the mall was typical of most malls, there are a few interactive places such as Dave’s and Busters. The dinning options are decent. There is a lot of parking option and very reasonably priced - first two hours are free. For three hours we paid $2 total.I will say in general if you are busing close by and want to check out the mall that will be a good use of time but it’s not worth visiting the area specifically for the sake of the mall.

This is a decent mall with a movie theater inside. HUGE But neat and clean. Very busy here on the weekends. There were a good selection of name brand stores, restaurants and food court options. There were also really nice views as well.

Amazing mall! The stores switch sometimes and has lots of fun things for kids and a while food court. I think it is better that Warwick Mall!

In the day and age of shopping malls closing, Providence Place still seems to be thriving. I recently went there with my daughter for school shopping and found a good selection of store choices as well as affordable options. After driving 80 miles to get here, it was a bit disappointing to see that my favorite store had closed up a few months before. Unfortunately, that is the day and age that we are living in with online competition. The only downside of Providence Place is that you have to pay to park there after a few hours. However, it was not enough to deter us from going there on that particular day.

The mall experience is amazing here! Amazing food court, stores, and entertainment. One big issue, the elevators in the mall weren't operational. Only the parking lot elevators were working. I have a disabled grandma who can barely walk. We had to help her down a broken escalator to get her down to the parking lot. This is a safety and professional issue. There were no signs saying they were deactivated, so we had to find it out on ourselves.

Boscov's is a great affordable store to shop. Friendly Associates & a Great selection. However I highly recommend you DO NOT go to the Dunkin Donuts on the 3rd floor. The girls that work there are vicious & violent to the point of throwing stuff at customers & jumping over the counter to fight an older woman. Terrible & scary.

I love the variety of stores not all malls have good stores or even any stores anymore. I love going christmas shopping here. The food is not so great tho but the pretzels are out of this world good I highly recommend them

Super nice mall! We went to Dave & Buster’s and it was pretty nice! We went to this mall two times in the past week and both times the mall was pretty empty. There is a parking garage where it is free to park for two hours. Overall it is a huge mall with tons of different stores.

I always enjoy a trip to providence Place Mall. Typically, there's plenty of parking, although it can be a little tough at peak times. I'm particularly keen on the food court with a good number of different choices. Upstairs, there's a great cinema, and if you're looking for a fun night out for the whole family, Dave and Busters is a whole lot of fun.

This has always been my favorite mall. I love all the stores, even the new ones they put in. Great food court, and the escalators always seem to be working.

A large shopping mall in the downtown has outlets of many brands, restaurants , an Imax Cinema Theatre, and other entertainments. Paid parking and wi.fi frequent registration are 2 major issues staff is cooperative.

I love what was done here- this interactive art is simple and super!!! Loved it and would like to replicate it at some schools.

Still always surprised to see a mall as active as this one. There is plenty of parking for the huge mall. The parking is also very generous with 0-2 hours free, and only $2 for 2-5 hours. Not sure about the rest of the pricing off the top of my head but I’m usually not there for more than 5 hours. There are a variety of well known stores like Apple, Spencer’s, Victoria Secret, etc. There is also a rather large food court on the 3rd floor of the mall.If you’re looking for something that’s not shopping there’s three entertainment places (might be more) that can help with that. Level 99 is new to me but it’s a fun facility full of challenges you can do head to head or with a team. There’s also a Dave & Busters above the food court for a more casual arcade experience with its own food and drinks. Right across from there is a movie theater if you want something more relaxing. With a healthy mix of food, shopping, and fun you won’t run out of fun things to do at the Providence Place Mall.
